Five synthetic examples
What a useful resume roast actually changes
A good roast does more than call a bullet vague. It identifies the missing evidence and shows the shape of a better line without inventing your results.
These examples are fictional. The numbers demonstrate structure; replace them with facts you can defend.
Example 1
Software engineer
Before
“Worked on an internal dashboard and fixed bugs.”
After
“Cut weekly reporting time from 6 hours to 45 minutes by rebuilding the operations dashboard in React and adding automated CSV exports.”
The fix: Name the user, the work, and the measurable change. “Fixed bugs” can stay as supporting detail, but it should not carry the bullet.
Example 2
Account executive
Before
“Responsible for prospecting and generating new business.”
After
“Built a 120-account outbound territory from scratch and sourced $480K in qualified pipeline across two quarters.”
The fix: Replace the job description with scale and outcome. If revenue is confidential, use account volume, quota attainment, conversion rate, or deal count.
Example 3
Teacher
Before
“Helped students improve reading skills.”
After
“Raised the share of students reading at grade level from 58% to 81% by running small-group phonics instruction four mornings a week.”
The fix: Outcomes matter outside corporate roles too. Use assessment gains, caseload size, attendance, program adoption, or time saved—whatever reflects the real work.
Example 4
Recent graduate
Before
“Created a machine-learning project using Python.”
After
“Trained and evaluated a Python classification model on 42K support tickets, improving macro F1 from 0.61 to 0.78 over the baseline.”
The fix: A project counts when the reader can see the problem, dataset, method, and result. “Used Python” is a tool list, not evidence.
Example 5
Career changer
Before summary
“Hardworking professional seeking to transition into project management.”
After summary
“Operations coordinator with 6 years leading vendor schedules, budgets, and cross-team launches; completed the Google Project Management Certificate in 2026.”
The fix: Lead with transferable work already performed. The target title can follow, but it should not erase the experience that makes the change credible.
